TMR Thumbstick Modules Are Now Available for Custom Xbox and PS5 Controllers
Published by Custom Controllerzz | New Releases | April 2026

Stick drift is one of the most frustrating things that can happen to a controller. Your character starts moving on its own. Your aim pulls to one side. Your vehicle drifts through corners you're not touching. And it gets worse over time, not better.
We built a solution directly into our custom controller builder. TMR Thumbstick Modules are now available as an add-on for all custom Xbox Series X/S and PS5 controllers at Custom Controllerzz, for $39.95.
Here's what they are, how they work, and why they're worth it.
Why Standard Thumbsticks Fail Over Time
Every stock Xbox and PlayStation controller ships with potentiometer-based thumbsticks. Inside each one, a small metal wiper physically drags across a curved carbon track to register your input. It works fine at first. But that friction gradually wears the carbon track down, creating dust and dead spots in the sensor. Eventually the readings become inconsistent and the stick starts sending input signals your thumbs never actually made.
That's drift. And it's not a defect in any individual controller. It's the natural end result of a technology that relies on physical contact to function. Every potentiometer stick will get there eventually. It's just a matter of how many hours.
How TMR Works Differently
TMR stands for Tunneling Magnetoresistance. TMR modules detect stick position using a magnetic tunnel junction rather than a physical wiper. A small magnet is attached to the stick shaft. As the stick moves, it changes the magnetic orientation detected by two ferromagnetic layers separated by an ultra-thin insulating barrier. The electrical resistance across that barrier changes with the magnetic orientation, and that change is what tells the controller exactly where your stick is pointing.
No wiper. No carbon track. No physical contact between sensing components at all.
The practical difference:
- Significantly better drift resistance over the lifespan of the controller, because there's no friction-based wear mechanism
- 3,000 points of resolution per axis, compared to roughly 256 on standard analog sticks, which means finer, more accurate tracking of small movements
- Lower power draw than standard potentiometer sticks, which is a small but real benefit for wireless battery life
We won't tell you TMR thumbsticks are drift-free, because no sensor lasts forever. What we will tell you is they are significantly more drift-resistant than the sticks your controller comes with, and they will outlast them by a considerable margin under regular use.
How to Add TMR Thumbstick Modules to Your Controller
In the Build Your Own customizer: Add the TMR upgrade directly while you're designing your controller. It's one of the selectable options in the builder for both Xbox Series X/S and PS5. You'll see exactly what your finished controller looks like with your chosen colors before you add it to your cart.
On prebuilt designs: If you're buying one of our prebuilt custom controllers, the TMR upgrade appears as an option on the product page before you add to cart.
The add-on price is $39.95 on top of your controller price.

Is $39.95 Worth It?
A standard Xbox or PS5 controller costs $60 to $80 to replace when drift gets bad enough to matter. If you game regularly, that replacement can come sooner than you'd expect.
The TMR upgrade at $39.95 is a one-time cost that meaningfully extends the usable life of your controller and keeps your inputs accurate longer. For casual gamers it's optional. For anyone who plays daily, competes online, or plays precision-heavy games like shooters, racing, or sports titles, it's hard to argue against.
